In November 2012, Clayton Equipment accepted an order from Glencore Xstrata, one of the world’s largest global diversified natural resource companies. The brief, to design and deliver three 25t Battery locomotives to replace their existing trolley locomotives utilised at one of their Canadian mining operations.
The Fraser Morgan Nickel mine, located in the Sudbury area of Northen Ontario, Canada, has been mining nickel-copper ores since 1929, and the locomotives are used to transport mined material for processing.
One of the principal advantages of opting for a battery solution was to enable the mine to remove overhead power systems that had proved costly to maintain and difficult to integrate with modern technology. The provision of battery powered locomotives gave the mine freedom from the catenary, allowing the business to operate an entire shift from a single battery charge.
The locomotive equipment was delivered in September 2013 and commissioned by Clayton Equipment staff in October.
