Watch Carol Vorderman take the Clayton Equipment Hybrid CBD30 locomotive on its journey up Snowdon Mountain Railway in the BBC Wales/Wildflame Productions: Closer to Home series episode 3.
“They produce 98% less emissions than the old diesels and need just a fifth of the fuel to do a whole day’s travel on the mountain”, comments Carol Vorderman.
Clayton Equipment Ltd is proud to provide the innovative technology in the world’s first rack and pinion hybrid locomotives supplied to the fleet at Wales most popular visitor attraction, Snowdon Mountain Railway (SMR).
The new greener 800mm gauge battery-diesel hybrid locomotives, the first of their type designed and built in the UK for over 27 years are driven by high torque, maintenance free electric motor and powered by traction battery and diesel generator which is switched off on descent while regenerative service braking recharges the battery.
The locomotive is configured with Euro Stage 5 compliant engine with lower power units which ensure significant maintenance and fuel savings. Quieter than a conventional diesel locomotive and with lower carbon emissions this new build from Clayton offers a new era of fuel efficiency and emission reductions.
Carol Vorderman certainly enjoyed the magnificent scenery as the Clayton CBD30 ascends Snowdon.
